Gerry’s background in music takes in DJing, promoting, running/working for record labels, writing (Straight No Chaser and Tradewinds), compiling albums and broadcasting.
Presenting a two hour show on Phonic FM every two weeks, a monthly show on Totally Wired Radio and running/DJing at two monthly club nights: Mambista (African, Latin, Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Soul etc.) and El Swing (Salsa) plus occasional sessions at Spiritland.
Gerry presented “Planet Mambo” on BBC London 94.9 FM (and previously on GLR) from November 1996 – September 2001 and continued to guest on the station until 2006 sitting in, mainly, for Charlie Gillett.
During that time Planet Mambo featured guests such as Joyce, Afro Cuban All Stars, Ashley Beedle, Kirsty MacColl, Snowboy, Rufus Wainwright, Mr. Scruff, Bebel Gilberto, Charlie Watts, Nitin Sawhney, Marcos Valle, Nathan Haines, Moreno Veloso, Joe Claussell, Lonnie Liston Smith and many more…
Gerry was a co-founder and resident DJ at the Mambo Inn which was a clubland phenomenon. At its peak it ran weekly on Fridays and Saturdays at the Loughborough Hotel in Brixton, South London with a musical policy that stretched from Latin to African to Jazz and beyond, and had to turn away hundreds of people every night. Besides hosting a wide range of bands the Mambo Inn also featured guest DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Dr. Bob Jones, Jo Shinner, Ross Allen, Sue Steward, Patrick Forge, Jon More (Coldcut), DJ Ritu, Gaz Mayall etc.
