I hadn’t finished showing my respects to Jeff Beck when we lost Wayne Shorter. These are era-defining musicians who cannot be replaced or replicated in my life and I shudder to think who might be next. Three tunes featured Jeff Beck – who could be pretty brutal in his early heavy rock days – including his incredibly tasteful turn on Stevie Wonder’s Looking For Another Pure Love; and three from Wayne Shorter: Jericho with Joni Mitchell, Ponta de Areia sung and written by Milton Nascimento and his own Footprints.
Huey Piano Smith was someone whose music i remember from my youth and probably haven’t heard since but he put the fun into funky New Orleans blues ’n’ boogie typifying the “9th Ward Sound” that was pretty popular back in the day and still sounds great today.
