A new take on a Sun Ra tune from Jimetta Rose; some Brooklyn Bossa via Jazz Room Records from Ahmed Sirour; long-term Gil Scott Heron collaborator and bandleader, Brian Jackson, drops a MAW remake of the classic Lady Day & John Coltrane; more newness from Norwegian trumpeter, Nils Petter Molvaer (with a little help from John Paul Jones); Australian singer/trumpeter, Audrey Powne, from her new album due to be launched at 93 Feet East in the autumn; UK based Orchestra Mambo International from their imminent debut album; American flautist, Elsa Nilsson’s Band of Pulses offer up Not Said, Not Heard; boss bassist, King Głyk, is back at Ronnie’s in August (highly recommended); and we say a sad goodbye to master percussionist and all-round good guy, Pete Eckford. Pete was a veteran of the UK Salsa scene – as well as playing with the likes of Zara McFarlane, The Herbaliser and Nathan Haines. Along the way he recorded the excellent A.C. Especial – as Mazacote – that he put together with Roger Beaujolais for my Deep South record label. Pete Eckford RIP.
