History

Gerry was a co-founder and resident DJ at the Mambo Inn which was a clubland phenomenon. It started on 18/11/87 at The Continental on Wandsworth Road with DJs Sue Steward and Dave Bennett alongside Gerry. It moved to Brixton on 4/2/89 and ran through to New Year’s Eve 1996 (with decor designed mostly by Caroline Ward and Andrew Clark). 

In that time the DJs were Max Reinhardt, Rita Ray and Gerry. There were amazing residencies in Edinburgh and 3 huge picnic events at The Rookery in Streatham as well as 2 compilation albums, Big Noise 1 & Big Noise 2

At its peak Mambo Inn ran weekly on Fridays and Saturdays at the Loughborough Hotel in Brixton, South London with a musical policy that stretched from Latin to African to Jazz and beyond, and had to turn away hundreds of people every night. Besides hosting a wide range of bands (such as Ronny Jordan, Angelique Kidjo, Jazz Jamaica, Dudu Pukwana’s Zila, Roberto Pla, Sambatucada, La Clave, Philip Tabane & Malombo, Francisco Ulloa ( Transglobal Underground). The Mambo Inn also featured guest DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Dr. Bob Jones, Jo Shinner, Ross Allen, Sue Steward, Patrick Forge, Jon More (Coldcut), DJ Ritu, Gaz Mayall etc.
