Back in its tenth year La Linea is funkier, punkier, rootsier and spunkier than ever. It’s all about what Latin Music can be, has been and very much is. Whether you are a mariachi punk, into speed salsa or gangsta charanga we’ve got something for you just leave your musical prejudices in at the door.
With their incomparable back catalogue and hyperactive technicolour show Kid Creole & The Coconuts at the Barbican promises to be as much fun as you can have with your clothes on. Viva El Mariachi, also at the Barbican, will be an evening of high Latino passion, cathartic sobbing into your cerveza and surprise guests, all dedicated to the cause of mariachi. Salsa Celtica, with fine musicians from north of the border and south of the equator, bring their fiddles, whistles and bongos to the South Bank. Mexican guitarist Morgan Syzmanski’s invigorating Machaca returns to La Linea with a new album of contemporary Classical music and a repertoire ranging from Villa-Lobos to Piazzolla; and Tango Siempre do their thing with special guest Gotan Project’s virtuoso Bandoneon player, Victor Villena. Barcelona’s Amparo Sanchez first appeared at La Linea leading her band Amparanoia and most recently as part of Spanish Bombs. Here she showcases her new project, Tucson Havana, on which she collaborated with Calexico. Kevin Johansen played La Linea previously as support, this time he’s headlining his own Jazz Café show alongside a mouth-accordion playing newspaper cartoonist with an overhead projector as La Linea once again proves that there’s more to Latin music than maracas and salsa dance classes.

“He’s an old ex-con that’s been away, now he’s back, no-one’s safe….”
Kid Creole & The Coconuts created a generation of Latin lovers in London in the early 1980s when he jetted in with a string of outstanding live shows and great albums. The Kid invented that hoary old beast “World Music” almost a decade before anyone else had a phrase for it and was always too smart to be labelled by it. With recent re-issues of their old Ze Records waxings, and new hipsters learning to love that Tropical Gangster sound when Latin begat Disco in Studio 54 – Kid & The Coconuts throw La Linea a special Lifeboat Party.

mariachi el bronx
There isn’t a sad song in the world that doesn’t sound better (and sadder) in a mariachi arrangement with those soaring horns and strings. Viva El Mariachi is putting some surprising UK vocalists in touch with their inner mariachi and encouraging them to sing to hide their tears. The night also features Kerrang hard core coverstars Mariachi El Bronx who decided that nothing would be finer than reinventing themselves as a mariachi orchestra – we say “Como no?” nothing is finer.

Salsa Celtica live in a musical country of their own devising where a Scottish reel can slide from a fiddle to a violin and pop out as a Cuban charanga. Mothered by a Venezuelan tribe of oil-folk marooned off Scotland’s West Coast in the seventeenth century, raised on neeps, tatties and deep-fried empanadas and a diet of Cuban and Topic 78s the Salsa Celtica tribe take no prisoners.

Amparo Sanchez late of Amparanoia and also of Spanish Bombs fame debuts her new CD ‘Tucson Havana’ (out 22nd March). Amparo’s new sound has evolved out of time spent in Havana exploring Cuban song traditions and explorations in Tucson with her long time musical collaborators John Convertino and Joey Burns of Calexico. The result is a beautiful hybrid country sound for a mythical borderland between the island of Cuban and the southern United States that could be dubbed ‘americana-cubana’.

If you caught the Argentine Alaskan troubadour Kevin Johansen in either of his spellbinding support slots for Seu Jorge and Lila Downs at the Barbican then you probably thought – what this guy really needs is a mouth-accordion playing newspaper cartoonist with an overhead projector to keep him company on stage. Well all of our prayers have been answered, Kevin’s back and this time he’s got quickdraw Buenos Aires draughtsman Liniers alongside him. Liniers created the beautiful artwork for Kevin’s recent albums and together they have published Oops! A book of their collaboration but it’s onstage that Kevin’s beautiful songs find the perfect frame in Liniers art.
