I have to thank Richard Williams’ excellent thebluemoment.com for the heads up re the centenary of the birth of the great bassist, composer and bandleader, Charles Mingus. This meant a spin of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, his tribute to Lester Young from 1959’s Mingus Ah Um, as well as Dry Cleaner From Des Moines from Joni’s 1979 Mingus album where Joni provided the lyrics and vocals and Mingus came up with the melody which was performed by Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Peter Erskine and Don Alias ie Weather Report with Herbie in place of Zawinul.
The show began with Orchestra Baobab as a tribute to the recent passing of their lead singer and founder member, Rudy Gomis. May he RIP.
