Bukky Leo Afrobeat Quintet will be in the house bringing the groove of funky Lagos to The Pleasure Palace! Bukky Leo grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and was spotted by the original Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen and immediately invited to join Tony’s new band. Bukky went on to play with the great Fela Kuti where the seeds of Afrobeat were being sown. After sometime in the band, and under the influence of Tony Allen, Bukky decided to follow his journey with his own distinct style of Jazz and Afrobeat.

In 1982, Bukky made it to London, where he became one of the forerunners of the Acid Jazz scene. A young A&R man called Gilles Peterson signed him to the newly formed Acid Jazz label. His first release ‘Rejoice in Righteousness’ was at the heart of the Acid Jazz world. It went straight to number one in the Rhythm and Blues, Dance and Jazz charts. After the Acid Jazz days, Bukky eventually formed Black Egypt who have recorded highly acclaimed albums featuring the musical legacies of both Fela Kuti and William Onyeabor.

Hope to see you at Mambista’s ‘end of term party’ with a live blast of Afrobeat and Acid Jazz from one of the masters, Bukky Leo!www.BukkyLeo.com

Bukky’s latest release is Skeleton (Gilles Peterson Mix) available via bandcamp.com.
