A couple from the excellent new comp put together by Gilles Peterson for International Anthem’s 11th birthday – drummer Tom Skinner kicked off the show plus one from Australian bassist Anna Butterss. Wild Iris Brass Band has also taken my fancy recently. They cite Afrobeat as an influence but they sound more nicely New Orleans to me.
South African drummer Louis Moholo Moholo, who died on June 13th, was the last remaining member over the groundbreaking racially mixed Blue Notes who arrived in London in 1964 as the apartheid regime wouldn’t let them live and play together in the land of their birth. Their pianist, Chris McGregor, formed his Brotherhood of Breath band after the Blue Notes went their separate ways although many of them, including Louis, regrouped in the new project. More SA jazz from alto man, Robbie Jansen.
Beautiful previously unreleased Bossa from Argentian guitarist Agustin Pereyra Lucena courtesy of Joe Davis’s Far Out and an underrated blast from the past with AfroCubism masterminded, and produced, by World Circuit’s Top Man Nick Gold.
Amina Claudine Myers took us somewhere different and deep, summoning up the spirit of the great Nina Simone and guitarist Ant Law kept things spiritual with his Where Would We Be featuring folky UK influenced vocals from Brazilian, Brigitte Beraha.
We have the latest single from one of my favourite new bands, Lophae, ahead other impending new release, Imagine More, and we ended with a live reworking of Jazzanova’s In Between release..Stay well. More next month.
